How to reduce wind noise in audio and video
Wind noise is one of the most frustrating sounds to clean up, and there's a real reason for that: it isn't like a fan hum or electrical hiss. Wind is low-frequency, high-energy, and constantly changing from moment to moment, which is exactly the combination that makes it hard for both your ears and your software to separate from speech. This guide covers why it's hard, how to prevent it, and how to reduce it in footage you've already shot.
The fast way: reduce wind noise online, free

Be realistic about what's recoverable: this works very well on the steady wind layer, but a sudden, strong gust that overloads the microphone will still leave some trace, because at that moment the wind and the voice occupy the same frequencies at similar volume. No software can perfectly separate two things that are, for a fraction of a second, the same sound.
Why wind noise is uniquely hard to remove
Most background noise (a fan, an air conditioner, tape hiss) is both steady and confined to a fairly narrow, consistent frequency range, which makes it easy to profile and subtract. Wind breaks both of those assumptions. It's low-frequency, which overlaps with the low end of speech and any music in the recording. And it's non-stationary: it surges and drops with every gust, so there's no single stable "fingerprint" the way there is with a hum. A noise reducer has to constantly re-adjust rather than subtracting one fixed pattern, which is a harder problem, and why wind is tougher to fully remove than most other noise types.
Fixing it at the source (before you record)
Prevention beats correction every time with wind, because a lot of the damage happens right at the microphone capsule before any processing can help:
- Use a windscreen or deadcat. A foam windscreen handles light breeze; a furry "deadcat" cover handles real wind and is standard for any outdoor video or interview shoot. This is the single most effective fix available.
- Reposition the microphone. Angling the mic away from the direct wind path, or moving behind a wall, car or your own body to block the gust, reduces how much turbulence reaches the capsule at all.
- Enable a low-cut filter at the source. Many shotgun and lavalier mics have a physical low-cut switch; turning it on removes a lot of rumble before it's even recorded, leaving less work for post-processing.
Fixing it in post-production
For a clip you've already recorded without a windscreen, combine two techniques:
- High-pass (low-cut) filter first. Cut everything below roughly 80–100 Hz. This removes the lowest rumble instantly and for free in almost any editor, since very little usable voice content lives down there.
- Noise reduction second. The high-pass filter won't touch the wind energy that overlaps with your voice's frequency range. That's what noise reduction is for, since it targets the steady pattern across the whole spectrum, not just everything below a cutoff.
Doing both in sequence, filter then reduce, gets noticeably better results than either one alone.

Always prevent wind noise at the source when you have the chance; a windscreen costs a few dollars and beats any amount of post-processing.
